Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary

²⁶ Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin ^(A)betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. ²⁸ And having come in, the angel said to her, ^(B)“Rejoice, highly favored one, ^(C)the Lord is with you; ^[a]blessed are you among women!”

²⁹ But ^[b]when she saw him, ^(D)she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. ³⁰ Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found ^(E)favor with God. ^31 (F)And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and ^(G)shall call His name Jesus. ³² He will be great, ^(H)and will be called the Son of the Highest; and ^(I)the Lord God will give Him the ^(J)throne of His ^(K)father David. ^33 (L)And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

³⁴ Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I ^[c]do not know a man?”

³⁵ And the angel answered and said to her, ^(M)“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called ^(N)the Son of God. ³⁶ Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. ³⁷ For ^(O)with God nothing will be impossible.”

³⁸ Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

²⁶ Then God said, ^(A)“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; ^(B)let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over ^[a]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

⁹ Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? ^(A)He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰ Do you not believe that ^(B)I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you ^(C)I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. ¹¹ Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, ^(D)or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

^12 (E)“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. ^13 (F)And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be ^(G)glorified in the Son. ¹⁴ If you ^[a]ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

^15 (H)“If you love Me, ^[b]keep My commandments. ¹⁶ And I will pray the Father, and ^(I)He will give you another ^[c]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— ^17 (J)the Spirit of truth, ^(K)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you ^(L)and will be in you. ^18 (M)I will not leave you orphans; ^(N)I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

¹⁹ “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but ^(O)you will see Me. ^(P)Because I live, you will live also. ²⁰ At that day you will know that ^(Q)I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. ^21 (R)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and ^[d]manifest Myself to him.”

^22 (S)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

²³ Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, ^(T)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. ²⁴ He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and ^(U)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

⁵ “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much ^(A)fruit; for without Me you can do ^(B)nothing.

^3 [a]And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who ^(A)labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in ^(B)the Book of Life.
